Your Greek News is Seeking Correspondents

Do you have your finger on the pulse of your local Greek community? Do you have a knack for storytelling, acting as a personality on camera, creating a story through visuals? If so, we’re probably looking for you!

Your Greek News is looking for independent and creative journalists to act as correspondents and report and shoot segments for us from all over the world.

We need people of various technical capabilities to help us out. If you’re a person who can report, shoot and edit packages and upload them to our servers OR a person who can report, shoot and mail/courier the tapes to us for editing, then we would love to hear from you. Or if you have specific interests as just a reporter or just a videographer (preferably with your own equipment) we're interested in you too!

Because this project is culturally focused, we’re ideally looking for people of Greek descent and speaking Greek is a definite asset. However, not everyone on our team is Greek and if you’re a non-Greek but have a soft spot for Greeks or are very in touch with your local Greek community, please feel free to contact us, as we would love to hear from you as well.

This is a non-paid position for now, but benefits include valuable producing experience, on-camera clips for demos and international exposure via the Internet! Trust me, this is where media is headed.

If interested, please forward your resume via email to Anastasia at atubanos@yourgreeknews.com and feel free to include links to online resumes/demos/Websites etc.

We’re very excited about what Your Greek News has become and what it could turn into. We look forward to hearing from you.
Euxaristw!

  • RECIPE: Spaghettini with Shrimp and Cherry Tomatoes

YourGreekNews.com and Christine Cushing have teamed up for a new feature called "Recipes that Would Make your Giagia Cry", where Christine uses her trademark flair on everyday Greek ingredients to bring a touch of Gastronomic panache to your kitchen!

This is a restaurant style pasta that can be made in 20 minutes, or so. A great trick for defrosting shrimp is to immerse the plastic bag in cold water and flip a few times. It will thaw in about 30-45 minutes. If you’re feeling really Greek, use the maximum olive oil and anchovies.

Prep time: 10 min

Cooking time : 15 min

1 lb peeled and deveined large shrimp – tail on about 16-20
1 500 gm. Package spaghetinni pasta or any cut shape
¼ -1/3 cup cup extra virgin olive oil (50 ml-80 ml)
3 cloves garlic, cut in slivers
1-2 whole anchovies , chopped
½ cup grape tomatoes, cut in half (125 ml)
¼ cup dry white wine or vermouth ( 50 ml)
¼ cup clam juice (50 ml)
juice of ½ lemon
Coarse salt and freshly cracked black pepper
fresh chopped parsley and dill to taste

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add pasta and cook until al dente, about 7-9 minutes. Drain pasta, reserving some of the pasta water.

While pasta is cooking, heat oil over medium heat in a large sauté pan. Cook garlic until just soft and golden. Remove immediately , transfer to a plate and save. Increase heat to high and add the shrimp seasoned with some salt and pepper and herbs, Toss for 2 minutes , until shrimp are golden but not fully cooked. Remove from heat and transfer shrimp to same plate as garlic.

Return pan to medium heat. Add the anchovies, grape tomatoes, white wine, lemon juice and clam juice. Cook for 2-3 minutes until tomatoes are just soft. . Return the shrimp and garlic to sauce. Drain pasta into the shrimp . Add some of the pasta water for a creamier sauce. Season the pasta with salt and pepper to taste. Add parsley and dill and toss. Serve immediately.

Makes 6 servings

Geia! I'm Anastasia and I was born in Toronto, raised in Newmarket and am back in Toronto again. I grew up loving to dig up stories, research about everything and being viewed as a source of knowledge and information, which naturally led to a career in Journalism. I attended Ryerson University, received a Bachelor of Journalism, and in the meantime worked as an editorial assistant for entertainment show eTalk Daily, and later as a chase producer at CTV's Report on Business Television. Soon after university, I helped launch the first online video news show about the Web hosting industry, WHIR TV where I had the opportunity to flex my on and off camera muscles, as a producer, writer and host and have my first taste in the wonderful world of Internet TV. Now, I'm hooked! I'm currently writing full-time for an international tech publication and bringing you your weekly dose of Your Greek News!

    Zodiac Sign: Aquarius.

Favourite area in Greece: Vrahati, Korinthia (the oceanside town my family is from)

Favourite Greek dish: Homemade gemista or authentic Greek gyros. And let's not forget a nice chilled frappe!

    Why people should watch YGN:

Because it's a fresh way to get a weekly update of what's going on in your international Hellenic community. From celebrity profiles, to concerts and community events, Your Greek News is here for You.

If you had to associate yourself with any of the Greek Gods/Goddess, whichone would you be and why:

Ever since I was a little girl I've been fascinated by Athena, goddess of widsom, war, the arts and justice. She's always been portrayed as strong, fair, merciful, independent and confident, which are characteristics I strive to embody, and everything from her unique birth to her involvement with prominent heroes in mythology, like Heracles, Odysseus and Perseus, make her absolutely brilliant. Athena was, in essence, the first contemporary career woman and I greatly admire that.

Favourite Quote:  It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it. Aristotle

Favourite Band or Artist: How about we choose current favourites? Mylo, Boards of Canada, Frou Frou, Beatles and Aqualung for relaxing, but for partying Missy Elliot and M.I.A are always reliable.

Interests and Hobbies: Hobbies include watching and dissecting movies/TV shows, reading EVERYTHING, going out to dinner with my girlfriends, cycling, dancing, traveling, playing the piano and schmoozing with new people. Interests include current affairs/media, fashion, science and technology and I'm horrible, but celebrity gossip. It's like a disease!

Favourite Greek celebrity: Besides my Dad? LOL Marina Sirtis, Counselor Deanna Troi from Star Trek: Next Generation.

    Michelle Hubay, Reporter

Born in Kenora, ON, my family and I spent a year of my childhood traveling around the world before settling into the lovely town of Peterborough.   Despite experiencing a cable tv-free youth, I decided to pursue my aspirations to create captivating, inspiring, and educational TV for kids.   I moved to Toronto to attend Ryerson University's Radio and Television Arts program, and spent a semester in Australia at Curtin University of Technology enjoying the sun and beaches...oh, and furthering my education. After working on a few CBC shows and on my own fun projects, I scored a position at Cookie Jar Entertainment, where I was happy to find myself immersed at long last in the world of kids TV. Currently, I'm working on the pre-school program The Doodlebops and trying my best to channel Barbara Walters as a reporter on Your Greek News.

Zodiac Sign: Taurus - and a true Taurus at that.

Favourite area in Greece: A tough one to answer until I've traveled at last to Greece myself, but until then, I can rely on pictures and stories...and Corfu seems absolutely gorgeous and interesting.

Favourite Greek dish: If I MUST narrow it down, and we're not including desserts, then my favourites are spanakopita and horiatiki salad.

    Why people should watch YGN:

It's the bomb!   It's the perfect place to connect with your heritage, to be inspired by the successes of other Greek people, and to keep up to date on all the latest events in the community.   The stories are in-depth, interesting, and timely.   And behind-the-scenes, we truly have a great time making the show for you!

If you had to associate yourself with any of the Greek Gods/Goddess, which one would you be and why:

Sneaky and adventurous and swift on his toes, the God of Travel, Hermes!   Yes, he is a cunning thief and the god of tricksters, but he is also the bringer of dreams and inventor of boxing...he's all that.

Favourite Quote: "If I'm not back in 5 minutes...just wait longer." - Ace Ventura

Favourite Band or Artist: I can never get enough Alanis Morissette, Tragically Hip, Michael Jackson, Missy Elliott, U2, M.I.A, Bob Marley, Beatles, Bedouin Soundclash, or Rolling Stones (I am indeed my mother's daughter).

Interests and Hobbies: I really enjoy spending time with my friends and fam, reading, dreaming big about my future, taking photos, and having the occasional good cry to my Oprah DVD.

Favourite Greek celebrity: Anthony Kiedis - I didn't spend 4 days straight addicted to his incredibly moving and emotional biography for nothing!

    Jennifer Polyzotis, Reporter

I grew up on the east side of Toronto...Scarborough that is, attending high school and then Centennial College. I earned a diploma in Business Marketing and then attended Ryerson University graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce. During my educational career, I worked for Virtually Canadian, a small Internet radio start-up now known as Iceberg Media owned by Standard Interactive. Along with being the marketing coordinator for Iceberg Media I also hosted music festivals, interviewed many artists and DJs and was the co-host of The Subterrane Internet Radio Show with local Toronto DJ Jelo. This ultimately lead me to TribeNation, an Internet entertainment company where I was a content producer, sourcing out events, interviewing and producing the segments as well as the online marketing coordinator. I now work in the film and television industry assistant directing, writing and doing product placement for both film and television projects.

    Zodiac Sign: Leo

    Favourite area in Greece: Santorini

Favourite Greek dish: Domas and pumpkin pita

    Why people should watch YGN:

The program provides viewers with current, local and international news pertaining to Greek culture with a sexy twist and sexy hosts. It's urban Greek cool.

If you had to associate yourself with any of the Greek Gods/Goddess, which one would you be and why:

Aphrodite because she is the goddess of love, beauty and sexual rapture. She is also associated with the sea and I love the ocean. The word aphrodisiac comes from Aphrodite and I love eating aphrodisiacs; oysters, chocolate etc...

Favourite Quote: Work hard, play harder.

Favourite Band or Artist: Bob Marley

Interests and Hobbies: Burning Man, traveling, soccer, knitting, party planning, board games, yoga and pilates.
Favourite Greek celebrity: Tina Fey, head writer of Saturday Night Live.

    Sophia Kaltsidis, Reporter

As being raised in Toronto by a wonderful nurturing family, I've been lucky enough to experience and appreciate not only my own history/culture through travel, but the many that have cultivated the world to evolve as we know it. I am very proud of my rich heritage (my father is a Pontian from Thessaloniki and my mother from Nafplio) and am VERY grateful for hardships that the diaspora endured to benefit their future families... all while leaving the Motherland they loved so.

As I have always put family first, I have just now aspired to return to a career that drives my being. After attaining my marketing diploma, I served as an events coordinator in the PR/Marketing dept. of a hi-tech company for several years until realizing the corporate world was not for me!. I now use my skills and love for culinary arts to manage the catering of a family run business which finally gives me the flexibility to explore my true passions. Being a people person and an undercover entertainer, I returned to Second City to improve my skills which landed me a gig hosting a recurring comedy production at the DIESEL PLAYHOUSE. Laughter IS the cure for everything!. As my skills and goals progress in the near future (I will keep you updated)...watch out for me!. Until then, I am honoured to be involved with such talented and driven individuals, such as the YGN crew.

ZODIAC - PICSES, yes..the creative sensitive type!

FAVOURITE AREA IN GREECE: Naturally my two homes away from home. Nafplio and Thessaloniki mouuuuuu.

FAVOURITE GREEK DISH: TIGANOFILA with Mizithra !!! Not really a main dish per say, but my 'happy food' that I indulge in. The only person that makes this that I know of, is my cherished Giagoula. So could it be a family secret? hmmmm.

Why people should watch YGN: What better way to keep connected to your Greek community then by tuning in to a broadcast fueled by positive contributors?. It's great that we can target the new generations that crave culture... in a language they can fully comprehend!. As I read, write and speak Greek (75%), I am still more comfortable with English.

If you had to associate yourself with any of the Greek Gods/Goddess, which one would you be and why:
I would definitely be HERA, the goddess of love and marriage. Due to my loyalty, I am very protective of the ones I hold dear and think their is nothing more important. As a complete woman, Hera balanced both private and public affairs, which I strive for. As I am also a believer of karma, she is a reminder that there is light and dark within each of us and that joy and pain are inextricably linked in life. She represents the fullness of life and proves that we can use our own wisdom in the pursuit of any goal we choose. I am very stubborn I must admit, but as for her famous vindictive ways, I on the otherhand am very forgiving. Try and fool me though... watch out!;-)

Favourite Quote: " A (man) is not old until regrets take the place of dreams" John Barrymore

Favourite Band or Artist: This is an impossible question for me! I grew up in a house where music was playing 24/7, so I respect all genres including international music from Arabic to Spanish...from the Beatles...to everything Motown. And...OF COURSE GREEK!! All depending on my mood, I always switch it up. Currently, I'm actually feeling Justin Timberlake (my secret crush..shhh!) and think that Timbaland did a SUPERB job on producing some of his current tracks. Amy Winehouse is also my 'bad ass' of the moment. That's one soulful voice!

Interests and Hobbies: Talking..can't you tell?!lol. I feed off of different cultures and keep myself pre-occupied with world affairs. I don't gossip...just love to hear the gossip!lol Didn't you know? I grew up in the GREEK GRAPE VINE. My downfall is star gazing and the tabloids act as my soap opera. Amongst my hobbies...writing, cooking, feuding with my family (lol) and definitely traveling.

Favourite Greek celebrity: STATHIS PSALTIS. Old school baby!. As seeing him perform live as a child, he was the epitomy of a true enternainer to me and I credit him for igniting my funny bug. Koulaaaa, ma'kous??!!! I have all his movies you know. As for INT'L...George Michael since he was my first "You know he's Greek right?".

    Martha Kezemidis, Reporter

Geia Sas!   I'm Martha, and I was born and raised in the beautifully diverse city of Toronto.   I've always loved the art of storytelling, something I realized through late-night gossip sessions with my girlfriends!   So, why not do something practical with your passion?   This led me to gain an interest in telling stories through video.   I graduated from The School of Radio and Television Arts at Ryerson University where I developed the craft of independent video production...and now I'm so happy to be able to bring this passion together with my love of the Greek culture!

    Zodiac Sign: Libra

Favourite area in Greece: Halkidiki...for the beaches!

Favourite Greek dish: My mom's Pastitsio

    Why people should watch YGN:

It's a great opportunity for us to feel connected to and proud of all the great things that are happening in the Greek community.

If you had to associate yourself with any of the Greek Gods/Goddess, which one would you be and why:

One of the Moirae because they controlled people's destinies, and I'm all about fate and destiny.

Favourite Quote: I don't really do favourites, but I do like this one...

"Be kind whenever possible...It is always possible." - Dalai Lama

Favourite Band or Artist: Right now, it's Prince, but like I said I don't really do favourites.

Interests and Hobbies: Good books, good food, planning trips, going on trips and of course, sleeping.

Favourite Greek celebrity: Criss Angel, "MINDFREAK"
